Who Scaled Everest First?
When Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the top of the Everest, a huge controversy broke out around who got there first. Both climbers made a pact to say that they had reached the top together and neither was first. In a 1954 interview, Norgay remarked, “I say I first Hillary second, Hillary say Hillary first I second — no good. We both together.” Only years later in his autobiography did Norgay reveal that Hillary had preceded him.
